Snow Day

Kevin Knebel '26

Every year, as the snow fell, we would construct castles. Well, snow castles, or snow forts depending on who you ask, but they were definitely castles to me.

The snow from the roads would be pushed onto the cul de sac starting the formation of towering walls. Hacking away at the walls, we made entrances and exits. A system of small tunnels would be made for us to crawl though and navigate our fortress.

Next thing we knew, we were being sieged. Snowballs flying from the other side of the wall. The condensed fluffy snowfall made into catapults and balistas, then hurled at us. After the first volley, we knew exactly who it was. Our parents.

As snowballs wiz past us, we send them right back. These volleys go back and forth as we try our best to secure the perimeter. We cannot let them get in.

The fighting continued until we could barely hold on. We were at the brink of collapse. I was sent out to communicate and see what they wanted. “Surrender the fort and come with us” or something like that.

I found myself in their dungeon. I was served a hot meal and drink. Lovely hospitality considering they were our sworn enemies.

Maybe coming in for hot chocolate wasn’t a bad idea after all.
